Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill, key architects behind Burj Khalifa—the world’s [current] tallest building—will be the masterminds of an all-commercial building soon to be taller than the Khalifa called the "Burj 2020."
Chosen by the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), the Chicago-based duo share an affinity for designing high-altitude buildings, such as the Kingdom Tower presently underway in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia—a kilometer-high structure that will also contend for the "world’s tallest building" title.
Details of the Burj 2020’s designs have not yet emerged, but DMCC chief Ahmed bin Sulayem says, “It will be a mega high structure floor-wise.” Situated in the Burj 2020 District among commercial, retail, and hotel spaces, the Burj tower will feature a 360-degree observation deck.
Set to begin construction later this year, the development will be completed in 2020.
