Brigitte Bardot's French Villa (above)
Andy Warhol painted her portrait, John Lennon and Paul McCartney idolized her and musician Bob Dylan dedicated the first song he ever wrote to her. French sex kitten, film and recording star, Brigitte Bardot, was the Kim Kardashian, Kate Upton and Megan Fox of the 1950s and 60s, but prettier and sexier. In 1970, sculptor Alain Gourdon used Bardot as the model for a bust of Marianne, the French national emblem. First becoming known for her film, “And God Created Woman,” Bardot made numerous films and recorded albums. Though she retired from the spotlight in the 1970s, she’s still going strong as a political and animal activist.
Brigitte Bardot was a beloved pop culture icon who introduced us to the French bikini, the “Sauerkraut” hairstyle (beehive) and the Bardot neckline - a fetching wide open neck that exposes the shoulders. When Bardot’s films first hit America, the dark days of censorship still existed. Movie goers were expecting to see a regular two-hour movie but wondered what they were missing when it abruptly ended in only twenty minutes.
Though Bardot was largely responsible for popularizing the Mediterranean seaside town of St Tropez, she also loved the hills overlooking the Cote d'Azur. Still in her young 20s, Bardot moved to her Le Castelet estate, a home with Medieval origins from the 13th Century. Within strolling distance of the village of Peymeinade, over time it has kept its original character with tasteful updating evolving to meet expectations of modern comfort. Currently used as a holiday rental, Le Castelet is now for sale. Dennis Miller's 1895 Home
Stand up comedy has come a long way from the nonsensical slapstick of W.C. Fields through clean fun Bob Hope and Danny Thomas to the smut nightclub comedy of Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor. A new type of comedy then evolved with an intelligent, sharp observant twist from George Carlin, Dennis Miller and Bill Maher, all three of whom, after becoming successful for their cutting edge wit, started sharing their opinions about religion and politics. Comedian Dennis Miller took that route and has been a five-time Emmy Award winner for his half-hour talk show “Dennis Miller Live” which ran for nine years on HBO. He received three Writer’s Guild of America Awards for the series and a WGA Award for his special, “Dennis Miller: Citizen Arcane.” On “Saturday Night Live,” Dennis was the “Weekend Update” correspondent for six years. Adding a couple of additional jewels to his crown, since 2007, Miller has had a daily talk show on Westwood One national radio and is also a regular contributor for “The O’Reilly Factor” on the FOX News Channel. In June, he will perform in a special on EPIX TV, “Dennis Miller: America 180°,” where he will be giving us his take on American life and politics.
But remembering for a moment that even busy comedians take the time to buy and sell houses just like the rest of us, Miller and his wife, Carolyn, put their historical 1895 mansion on the market. Sited on 3.76 acres, the 10,000-square-foot home is surrounded by mature landscaping and specimen oaks with views of ocean, mountains and rolling lawns. There are three gated entries, tennis court, pool, spa, outdoor fireplace and many venues for entertaining. Also on the property is a three bedroom, two bath second residence. Chicago's Hyde Park Keck Home
Chicago Architect, William Keck’s big opportunity and resulting success came when he designed two model structures for the Century of Progress exhibition in Chicago in 1933 called the “House of Tomorrow.” A modernist, with these two structures he was beginning to find his own unique style. In 1934 he designed another model, “Crystal House.” These were the first steel-framed glass houses in the United States. His modernist designs caught on with other architects and home owners who began to incorporate some of his ideas into their own homes. By the time William Keck had come this far, his brother, George Fred Keck had finished his architectural and engineering schooling so they formed an architectural practice together, Keck & Keck. In 1940, the Kecks designed the first passive solar home. When their his new home design was covered in the Chicago Tribune, it was the first time the term “solar house” had been used.
In 1937 the brothers designed Keck Gottschalk Keck Apartments in Hyde Park. The modular designed building is also where the brothers made their home. It was designed to have three apartments, each with its own one-car garage, a bicycle room and secure storage. Now a condominium building, one apartment is available for sale. At approximately 2,000 square feet, the unit has four bedrooms, two baths, a wood-burning fireplace, a den, library and deck. Its enviable location is in the Hyde Park neighborhood across from the University of Chicago Quad. The building was designated a Chicago landmark in 1960. Always well known, the neighborhood now has even more to recommend it since it is also the home of President Obama and his family.
