The penthouse at New York City’s illustrious, nearly 100-year-old Hotel des Artistes has been listed with a $19 million price tag, according to press materials.
Owned by Jean “Johnny” Pigozzi, an Italian investor and heir to the French Simca automobile brand, the 5,377-square-foot charismatic residence, designed by Italian architect and designer, Ettore Sottsass, was last available 30 years ago.
Pigozzi, an avid art collector, has accumulated the world’s largest collection of contemporary African art, some of which is displayed throughout the three-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom penthouse. It is unknown whether the art will be included in the sale.
A double-height great room, adjoined to the dining room, on the first level offers views of Central Park through its 15-foot-high windows, the listing states.
There is also a guest bedroom suite, a chef’s kitchen, a powder room, and a bathroom on this floor.
On the second level, a bedroom, with two bathrooms and a dressing room, lead out to a balcony that overlooks the great room.
The master suite, with dual dressing rooms, a media room, a kitchenette, and two bathrooms, is located upstairs on the third level; along with a study that overlooks an 827-square-foot private terrace.
Pigozzi told Bloomberg that he sometimes lent the penthouse to famed friends, such as Mick Jagger.
Built by Walter Russell, a self-taught painter, sculptor, musician, and educator, in 1917 as an artist's cooperative apartment, the 18-story Hotel des Artistes was designed in the neo-Gothic style by George M. Pollard.
Amenities include a pool, two workout rooms, a squash court, and a roof garden. The Leopard at Des Artistes restaurant is located on the first floor.
