They've decked the halls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! Just like many of us, the residents of the White House love to decorate for the holidays. We're taking a look at the Obamas' White House Christmas decorations with HGTV's “White House Christmas 2012” special.
Michelle Obama, who chose this year's theme of "Joy To All", worked closely with designer Genevieve Gorder to undertake the massive holiday design. The tree, which arrived by festive horse-drawn carriage, is an 18-foot Fraser fir now on display in the Blue Room. Michelle and her daughters Malia and Sasha (along with dog Bo) supervised the arrival of the tree, which is dedicated to the troops, veterans and military families who serve the United States each day. The tree is trimmed with ornaments decorated by children living on U.S. military bases all over the world. The tree joins an additional fifty-four smaller trees on display throughout the White House.
Festive details like Bo-themed decorations, bright cranberry wreaths and a gingerbread White House complete the design. "I think next to the North Pole, this is probably one of the most magical places," said Michelle Obama. "The house comes alive in so many ways and with so many volunteers, and such excellent staff, the transformation happens literally overnight."
