The advances occurring in features and technology for outdoor kitchens has not only opened up advanced possibilities in functionality, but also those relating to placement and elevations,” states Ryan Hughes, Founder and Creative Director, Ryan Hughes Design. “No longer are outdoor kitchens a simple extension of or required to be adjacent to interior spaces. They can be designed to be fully self-contained with personalized functionality and located wherever outdoor entertaining experiences are desired.” Outdoor durability or performance features are found in state-of-the-art outdoor grills from smokers to griddles, or stainless appliances from refrigeration to pizza ovens, warming trays to beverage centers. Kitchen designs are also exhibiting luxury natural elements with an expanding use of metal, stone or tile on surfaces. Whether horizontal countertops or vertical feature walls, luxe living is finding its way into outdoor living design.

Archetype Architecture
This townhouse in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn was completely transformed by Archetype Architecture. Surrounded by lush swaths of green lawn, complete with full service outdoor kitchen, it is a picture-perfect everyday retreat. Alan Berman envisioned the outdoor space to continuously flow as a natural extension of the interior with materials that harmoniously intertwine the two spaces. We defined separate zones for cooking, dining and lounging to create a well-organized and functional outdoor space. This sleek uber functional area contains a grill, refrigerator, sink and storage. One could also consider adding a pizza oven, smoker or griddle for versatility. A balance of wood, metal, stone, glass or all-weather wicker provides more textural interest, creating the ultimate indoor-outdoor connection.
