In designs for outdoor living, a variety of fire features, including fireplaces, fire walls, fire pots, or fire lounges are guaranteed to provide warm and welcoming focal points. Innovation is central to the creation of custom outdoor fire elements via shapes, materials, and placement in relation to other exterior design elements. “Sunken fire features are trending now especially as they are incorporated into outdoor pools,” said Ryan Hughes, creative director and founder of award-winning Ryan Hughes Design. “A fire lounge appearing to be floating within a pool can feature innovative access to customized performance fabric cushions and pillows. Every aspect of outdoor fireplaces can make it a conversation-generating focal point from textures to tile, colors to custom lighting.”

Here are some innovative ways to elevate, update, and decorate fireplaces to create a cozy focal point in your home:
Tile Surround: Install colorful or patterned tiles around the fireplace to give it a modern and artistic look. You can create a mosaic design or use subway tiles for a sleek appearance. This will add a touch of elegance and make your fireplace stand out.
Floating Mantel: Replace a traditional mantel with a floating shelf made of reclaimed wood or a sleek, minimalist material like metal. This provides a contemporary and streamlined look while still allowing space for decor.
Custom Shelving: Build custom shelves on either side of the fireplace to showcase your favorite books, art pieces, or collectibles. This not only adds functionality but also makes the fireplace a central part of your room's design.
Statement Artwork: Hang a large, eye-catching piece of artwork above the fireplace. The artwork can set the tone for the room's decor and draw attention to the fireplace as a focal point.
Built-in Seating: Create built-in seating around the fireplace. This could be in the form of a window seat, cozy nook, or even a combination of benches and cushions. It not only adds warmth but also provides extra seating space.
Double-Sided Fireplace: If your space allows, consider a double-sided or see-through fireplace that can be enjoyed from two adjacent rooms. This creates a unique and cozy atmosphere, especially in open floor plans.
Fireplace Insert: Upgrade your existing fireplace with a modern, energy-efficient fireplace insert. These inserts come in various styles, including gas, electric, or wood-burning, and can be operated with ease.
Textured Wall: Add texture to the wall behind the fireplace. You can achieve this with materials like reclaimed wood, shiplap, or stone veneer. Textured walls can create a rustic and cozy ambiance.
Mirrors: Install a large mirror above the fireplace to reflect light and make the room appear more spacious. This also adds a touch of glamour to your fireplace design.
Fireplace Screen: Choose a decorative fireplace screen with intricate patterns or designs. It not only enhances safety but also serves as a stylish accessory when the fireplace is not in use.
Candles and Lanterns: Place an assortment of candles and lanterns inside the fireplace during the warmer months when you're not using it for heating. This creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Mantel Decor: Update your mantel decor seasonally. For example, you can decorate it with fresh flowers in the spring, beach-inspired items in the summer, and cozy candles and greenery in the fall and winter.
Firewood Storage: If you have a wood-burning fireplace, consider incorporating a stylish firewood storage solution. This can be a built-in alcove, decorative crates, or a wall-mounted rack.
Color Palette: Choose a complementary color palette for the fireplace and its surroundings. Cozy colors like warm neutrals, deep blues, and earthy tones can enhance the inviting feel of the space.
Smart Fireplace: Upgrade to a smart fireplace that can be controlled remotely with a smartphone app. Some models even come with customizable LED lighting and flame effects.
Remember that the key to creating a cozy focal point with your fireplace is to blend functionality and aesthetics while considering your personal style and the overall decor of the room. Experiment with different ideas until you find the perfect design that makes your fireplace a welcoming centerpiece in your home.

A fireplace doesn’t need to look old-fashioned to be warm and cozy. We designed this electric fireplace with a purple glass tile surround and a quartz top that sits below a television in a den/guest room in a downtown Boston condominium. The glass tile adds a bit of sparkle and color, and the fireplace adds literal warmth as well as visual warmth. The wall sculpture to the left is actually the handle to pull down the murphy bed when the room serves as a guest room. The comfy sofa and soft fuzzy throw add to the cozy vibe. It’s one of the smallest rooms in the condo, yet it’s a favorite for the owners and their guests. Even modern high-rise living spaces deserve a little old-fashioned warmth.
