How would you use Pantone’s Color of the Year 2014, Radiant Orchid, in a living space?

I always try and use bold colors, such as the Radiant Orchid, as accent colors, mainly focusing on accessories that can easily be swapped out as the trends change. As a background color, I would choose a grey that has an undertone of purple. I would also make sure to mix in bright white and a little saffron for contrasting accent colors.

What’s one cool new trend you predict for 2014?

Honestly, no trends. Let’s all try and unleash ourselves from being trendy this year!

If you had an unlimited budget, what is the first change you would make to your own home or personal space?

I am at the tail end of remodeling an old 1930s home. The interior space is almost done, but I have always felt strongly that the exterior of a home should be an extension of the interior. So, I think I would focus on bringing my patio and landscaping up to par. When I am entertaining guests in the dining room, I’d like to be able to look out my french doors at a beautifully designed and functional patio space.

What is the most difficult type of client to work with? What is your best advice for dealing with this type of client?

Every client has different obstacles that we overcome together, but I think clients that second guess you as a designer are definitely the most difficult. For these types of clients, I try and feed them the design slowly so it’s not so overwhelming. Most of the time they only question things at the beginning of the design process because they can’t visualize the end product until it’s completed in their home. The trust comes as the project starts to unfold.
