Having lived in Australia, Canada, and the Caribbean over the years, Ian Gengos never really considered borders or norms as obstacles in the pursuit of what mattered most. The want for a better balance between work, family, and lifestyle prompted his move to Los Cabos in 2004. The wonderful climate, rich and vibrant culture, and opportunities in the field of International Real Estate Sales and Marketing just made sense.

Ian built a team for the Los Cabos market that constantly strives to elevate to the highest possible standard. Their success is based on the belief that they must meet their clients at their highest point of need and over-deliver on their commitments.

Emily Dickinson once wrote ‘My friends are my estate’ and Ian Gengos treats all clients as his friends. He and his team believe that client relationships are forever.

Here, Ian speaks with Haute Residence about why he made the move to Los Cabos and what he loves about the new country he now calls home.

Why did you choose Real Estate?

Although formally educated in Physiology and Pharmacology, I've been in sales for my entire professional career. My father's career in sales and his passion for people sparked something in me, and whether through osmosis or circumstance, I found myself following in his footsteps. Moving to Mexico in 2004 and raising my family here proved aspirational for a lot of people I shared my story with, and the natural transition was to then help many families do the same.

What was your journey to where you are today?

For over a decade, my early career was spent working in the medical field; with roles ranging from medical and pharmaceutical sales to government relations and patient advocacy work to marketing and sales management. It was rewarding and challenging, but I found myself burning out and saw many of my colleagues at the time feeling the same way. I stepped away for an extended vacation in 2003 to 'recharge'. A friend of mine was selling property in Cabo and I met a few of his colleagues. They must have tired of listening to me complain about putting another 100,000 km on my company car in the Canadian winter, so they offered me a job. The idea stuck in my head until I couldn't think of anything else. In September of 2004, I packed up everything and drove to Mexico and I have called it home ever since.

What is your biggest success story to date?

Watching my father over the years I learned that trust is a currency, and that if something is worth doing, then it's worth doing well. He was good to all people and I try to embrace that same approach with each of my valued clients. Every time I help a client, family, or friend bridge the gap between their dreams and their reality I think it's a success story.

What makes your market unique?

Over the years, Los Cabos has grown from a sleepy fishing destination to a global hot spot for all types of visitors. Whether looking to vacation, invest, or retire, people migrate back to the climate and culture of the area annually and every year there's more to explore. World-class sport fishing, international events and festivals, an exploding gastronomy scene, vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches and ocean life, and a burgeoning medical tourism business are but a few reasons the area has become a second primary home market for many.

However, don't let the laid-back Cabo lifestyle mislead you. The real estate market is as sophisticated as any other and has evolved to accommodate all ranges of interest and budget. From off-the-grid beach casitas to ultra-high-end trophy estates for the most discerning of real estate collectors, there really is something for everyone. Demand is always high, and property valuations have held strong. If lifestyle is the new currency, the Residents of Los Cabos are truly wealthy.
