What is the key to a successful interior design project?
I would say that the most successful interior design projects I’ve completed have been a real collaboration where all members of the team are willing to chip in, leave their ego at the door, and do whatever it took to get the job done – including the owners!
Some of the qualities I look for in team members are individuals who are eager to learn from one another as well as on their own, take pride in their work and are willing to work well with other members of the team and help them out in a pinch.
What is one important mistake many interior designers make? How have you overcome/avoided it?
Designers are artists. They tend to give a lot of their time and energy because they care passionately about their work and having a beautiful result. But at the same time it is a business, so while it’s easy to forget that there is a schedule and budget there can’t be a successful business without these key factors.
Interior designing for others has shaped your career. How does your design aesthetic appear in your own home? Are you as passionate in designing your own personal spaces?
Designing for your own home space can be tricky and I know many designers do struggle with it. For my own home, I designed it to fit the aesthetics for me and my late husband – so I did have a client in a way! My husband collected a great deal of art and artifacts from throughout Asia so I created a contemporary background to display the art in a more accessible home display. The design turned out to be a great mix of “East meets West” which is the style we were aspiring for.
