San Miguel de Allende, Mexico exclusive Haute Residence member Greg Gunter, Broker & Owner of the exclusive Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices office, announced his firm’s real estate sponsorship of the recent 2nd annual Design House. San Miguel hosts a plethora of internationally acclaimed interior designers in this design-rich 16th-century UNESCO World Heritage city and the Design House hosted the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Just like the eponymous annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House—hosted at premier venues across America—the recent 2022 San Miguel de Allende Design House was also a fundraiser that showcased the talents of several interior designers boasting a local presence in San Miguel, as well as in the U.S. Unlike the Kips Bay homes, this Design House is actually being sold!

The 7,815 SF Design House proves characteristic of the popular Spanish Colonial design aesthetic that expats crave when looking for homes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Listed for $1.75MM USD, this eight-bedroom, ten-bathroom home showcases the region’s indigenous Spanish Colonial architecture so popular with American ex-pats looking for culturally rich, hand-crafted details.

“As an architect myself,” notes Broker Gunter, “I love educating my clients about the unique design details prevalent in our city. They love that nothing comes from a box in San Miguel!”

Vibrant stucco and Saltillo tile floors are common, even in California or Santa Fe, but Gunter explains details like tejamanil—the woven wood ceilings—and cantera-carved cortina window aprons prove among the most authentic Spanish Colonial detailing found in Mexico.

The grand foyer of the Design House was designed by Design House Founder and Chairperson Kelley West, who is both a designer and Luxury Collection agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices.

The Design House featured custom-designed rooms accredited to specific designers, most notably a dining room fitted by the internationally acclaimed—and previous Haute Residence featured—Fisher Weisman Collection, by designers Andrew Fisher and Jeffry Weisman, shown above. After becoming part-time residents of San Miguel de Allende, they expanded their San Francisco showroom to a second location in San Miguel’s Centro.

Other Design House designers included Rachel Horn, Katherine Leutizinger, Karina Tabarez, Nicole Norris, and Miralda Sojo-Cordá. The grand foyer was designed by Kelley West, Chairperson and Founder of the Design House event and the Luxury Collection Realtor for the Design House with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices.

The Fisher Weisman Collection’s design team created the Design House’s dining room, including a dining chandelier custom designed by the firm.

“My coastal clients are always astounded at the values here,” adds Gunter, who notes that homes in San Miguel de Allende can run one-third to one-fifth the prices of homes on either coast. “The Design House is priced at $223/SF, an astonishing figure relative to, say, California home prices.” And Gunter notes that carrying costs are even more affordable, with annual property taxes on a home like the Design House running under $2,000 USD.
