Greg Gunter presents
American ex-pats flocking to the UNESCO World Heritage central Mexico city of San Miguel de Allende love the city’s almost five centuries of history and the architecture that accompanies it. Unlike the definition of Spanish Colonial in the U.S.—thick white walls and red tile roofs—that term is used here for the authentic old-world architecture involving lots of natural stone walls, carved Cantera stone details—from structural columns to window frames to ornately detailed fireplace surrounds—many and-crafted wrought iron details, and natural clay or stone floors. In Mexico—especially in San Miguel de Allende—few construction items come from a box, everything is hand-crafted, including the doors and windows. Even swimming pools are seldom shotcrete, instead adorned with natural stone coping and historic tile inlays.
Casa Pilancon—named for the narrow, historic alley this estate sits on—proves the epitome of truly authentic Spanish Colonial architecture, as shown in the photos below. Located in the heart of Centro and a short five-minute stroll to the town square—called the Jardin—this home boasts a 17th-century front wall which now serves as the foyer through which guests pass before making their way through the heavily landscaped gardens and waterfall-fed swimming pool to the actual home set far back off the street. As with all homes in San Miguel de Allende, this estate boasts multiple outdoor terraces and patios, starting with the outdoor fireplace-anchored living room—facing the swimming pool—that doubles the size of the adjacent indoor living room. The expansive roof terrace—another feature common to homes here—offers city views and an eagle’s perspective of the pool below. Sold by a former art dealer, the home came fully furnished, inclusive of many museum-quality artworks.
